Majestic Pathways at Gorges du Loup

Great destination on our hiking tour, we started opposite the Basilica and followed the E1 through the city center then always uphill towards Huel Lee. On our way we passed impressive rock formations, a stream and various smaller caves. This hiking trail is quite well frequented, as the Mullerthal trail also runs through it. You meet great people, whether long-distance hikers or occasional/pleasure hikers. The path is very clean, parking spaces are available at various points. However, we also discovered a converted smaller cave that some people use as a toilet. 🙈🙈 Guys, bag it up and take it with you...there's nothing worse than speeding along the side of the path or in these precious rock formations...otherwise a thoroughly worthwhile hiking destination! On our part: Leave no Trace! For the love of nature 💘

Yes, very nice for hiking

It was a beautiful sunny day in March but stepping into the Gorges Du Loupe was like entering another world. It feels like a prehistoric landscape, with towering rock faces and dense tree cover, even though there were no leaves yet on the trees. I followed the E1 circuit, starting and ending in Echternach, going anti-clockwise, some 14km which took around 3.5 hours. Heading up to the gorge and onward to the Labyrinth involved a steep climb and slippery dark stone steps for the first few kilometres. I found it very slow going, climbing up and down, watching my feet the whole time. After the first 5km or so, the route was much easier, with more gentle climbs up and down, mainly along a forest trail on a sandy track. All the various routes are extremely well signposted throughout – there were only a couple of moments of wondering which way to go next and it very quickly became clear. Plenty of resting points, bridges and rippling streams to enjoy. Not too busy, even though it was a sunny Saturday, but enough people on the quieter stretches of the route that there wasn't that 'what if' that can come when hiking solo. The first pic shows the steps up through the gorge, then the view down from the 'bridge' which extends across to give a panoramic view out over the countryside and over the gorge below - as per second pic. Also a map track for the route - in two sections as I stopped to eat lunch after the first 8km - and a flavour of the elevation of the first stretch, and my very slow pace!
