A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting Finca El Pilar, a beautiful place ideal for hiking and birdwatching. It's not exactly cheap if you're traveling with family or splitting the costs, but the beauty of the place, the well-marked trails, and the variety of birds you can find are details worth appreciating.

This is truly an odd place and I'm still kind of confused. The trail takes about 15 minutes to complete, even with the hundreds of stairs. It's a pretty forest/jungle but definitely not worth the Q75 entrance fee for the pools and trails, and probably not worth the Uber driver over honestly. The pools only cost 25 Q. On a hot day if you're looking for something a little more adventurous and split the cost of the Uber with friends to make a day of it it could be worth it. One pool has crystal clear and freezing cold water. The other was warmer but bright green. Maybe there's an explanation for it other than algae but I didn't test it. Definitely don't pay for a tour here. And it's only worth it if you make it into a pool day with friends for Q25 per person or you're an avid bird watcher. I've never seen so many humming bridal in one place.

We were very excited to capture good photos of a red-tailed hawk. We had seen one before but this is the first to get decent pictures. We will be going back to this beautiful place near Antigua yet a long way from Antigua.
