About This Adventure Destination

Mt Elden Lookout Trail, located near Flagstaff, Arizona, offers a remarkable outdoor experience notable for its striking volcanic terrain and expansive views. This trail in Coconino National Forest climbs steadily through thick stands of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, providing a refreshing forested setting uncommon in many Arizona hikes. As an elevated destination, it delivers stunning panoramas of Flagstaff city below and the distant San Francisco Peaks, a major highlight for visitors seeking impressive landscapes in northern Arizona.

The trail itself stands out for its rugged volcanic rock formations, remnants of ancient eruptions shaping the region’s unique geology. These rocks combine with seasonal wildflowers and diverse wildlife—elk, deer, and abundant birds—to create a lively natural environment. The route, approximately 3 miles one way with an elevation gain over 2,400 feet, challenges hikers with a steady ascent that suits those with some stamina and hiking experience. At the summit, a historic lookout tower marks the peak, rewarding visitors with 360-degree views across the forest and beyond.

While the signage along the trail can be somewhat unclear and multiple paths intersect, the area’s tranquility and diversity attract both locals and visitors aiming for a rewarding day hike. Spring and fall offer especially vivid scenery, with colorful foliage and comfortable temperatures. Though the hike requires preparation, the blend of forestry, geology, and expansive views makes Mt Elden Lookout Trail an outstanding destination for outdoor enthusiasts near Flagstaff.

Editorial Assessment

Mt Elden Lookout Trail is a standout location for its geological interest and scenic views but doesn't quite reach the global prominence reserved for the most unique natural formations. It remains a top destination for regional outdoor adventures.

Very nice and somewhat challenging hike. We started in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. They are lots of spots to rest in the shade. It took my wife and I a little less than 4 hours round trip. On the way back down, the day breeze started up and the crows were enjoying themselves on the thermals above our heads. The vegetation was very interesting, but that maybe because I've lived in Alaska most of my life.
