The Appalachian Trail crosses here, and if you hike north about 1 mile, you'll come to an old fire tower converted to an observation platform. The hike is moderate to hard with about 700 feet of gain going out. Drive up from the Wayah Rd (Nantahala) side is easy, mostly paved. Nothing sketchy or breathtaking. The elevation change is very gradual. The drive up from the Hwy 28 (Little Tennessee River) side is a bit more challenging, recommend 4WD and a fearlessness of switchbacks. The rate of elevation climb is moderate to high. Gain of 2,800 feet in six miles. There are ample long range (15 mile) easterly views that can be breathtaking on a clear day. Single lane gravel road, yield to descending vehicles (if you meet someone and you're going up, plan to back down to a passing space). If you're driving down, it's nice of you to look ahead/ down to see if there's an approaching vehicle you can be courteous and wait in a passing spot for them to ascend.
