Paid entry and a state park; you'd assume the beaches are maintained better. They are not. Beaches were as dirty and unkempt as the public free ones, may as well just go to the free ones at that point. Upside was the outdoor faucets and showers to clean off with and changing rooms.

Absolutely loved camping on the beach side of Galveston Island State Park. The tent sites are on raised wooden decks with power outlets, giving you a perfect view of the Gulf and a dry, level surface—no sandy mess inside the tent. There’s a direct path from our site straight to the beach, which made sunrise walks unforgettable. The bathrooms were spotless and clearly updated—spacious, clean, and well-maintained. Cell service was strong the whole time, which was a bonus. Be warned though: there is zero shade or wind protection. The wind was relentless. We saw multiple tents collapse or blow over, and a few campers had to sleep in their cars. If you're tent camping, bring serious stakes and a backup plan. That said, the elevated platforms helped keep us above the sand and any moisture. RV campers have access to full hookups, but those sites are very close together—almost no privacy. Still, they’re modern and well-equipped. If you can handle the wind and full sun, this is an incredible beach camping experience. We’d absolutely camp here again—with better tent anchors next time!
