I hiked a four day section of the Appalachian Trail through Great Smoky Mountains National Park and moved through old growth forest, open balds, and ridge walking that delivered a version of the southern Appalachians I had not found on shorter day hikes. The balds on the Tennessee-North Carolina border gave me views in every direction across a landscape of rolling forested mountains that stretched without interruption to every horizon. I camped at shelters that required reservations and found the system worked well enough that the trail felt managed without feeling controlled. The Smokies section of the AT is among the most rewarding in the entire 2,000-mile route.
