Lichen Peak stands as a striking feature on the edge of Golden, CO, offering a distinctive outdoor destination close to the foothills of the Rockies. This rugged peak draws visitors with its colorful rock-covered surface, adorned with vivid lichens that give the formation its name. The area contrasts gently rolling grasslands below with steep, rocky slopes above, creating a diverse landscape that appeals to both casual walkers and more serious hikers.

The trail to Lichen Peak is well-regarded for its rewarding views: from the summit, hikers are treated to sweeping panoramas stretching east across the Colorado plains and west into the Rocky Mountains’ impressive peaks. On clear days, the Denver skyline punctuates the horizon, adding an urban touch to the natural scene. Wildlife sightings are common here, including mule deer, coyotes, rabbits, and a variety of bird species, making the area popular with nature lovers.

The hike itself presents variety, from steep sections with a challenging 15-20% incline starting at the western trailhead, to more gradual paths that allow for a leisurely pace. The terrain is rocky at the summit, where small stair-like features help visitors reach the very top for prime sunset views. Lichen Peak’s close proximity to Golden—an area rich in western heritage—makes it appealing for anyone looking to blend nature with a touch of Colorado’s historic charm.

Loved it! When you're at the top, it's a short walk with a few stairs to a peak. Be careful not to drop food crumbs and you can already see animal droppings there which dampens the experience. Otherwise, a great hike from the North Table Mountain west trailhead.
