About This Adventure Destination

Shell Falls, located in the scenic Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, offers an impressive display of nature’s power and beauty. This captivating waterfall plunges about 120 feet into a rocky canyon, framed by massive ancient granite boulders that date back over 2.5 billion years. The roar of the water combines with the fresh mountain air and dense forests to create a peaceful yet awe-inspiring atmosphere rarely matched in the region.

The site is part of the Shell Falls Interpretive Area, which features well-maintained paths and multiple viewing platforms allowing visitors to enjoy breathtaking, unobstructed views of the falls from several angles. The surrounding canyon supports a diverse range of flora and fauna typical of the Bighorn National Forest, including deer, birds, and even bighorn sheep in less trafficked spots. These elements together highlight the geological significance and natural richness of the region.

Educational displays at the visitor center share the fascinating geological history behind the granite rock formations and the origin of the falls, enhancing understanding for visitors of all ages. This combination of natural wonder and informative interpretation makes Shell Falls an essential stop for travelers passing through northern Wyoming.

Reviews consistently praise Shell Falls as a hidden gem with accessible walking paths and stunning scenery. Visitors appreciate the quiet beauty, especially the large granite formations that emphasize the waterfall’s grandeur. Although facilities can be limited during maintenance or outages, the overall site remains welcoming and safe with clearly marked trails and viewing points.

Those giant granite boulders make it one of the best waterfall I’ve seen. The canyon is majestic. A must stop if you are driving through bighorn along 14. Staffs were friendly and knowledgeable in the visitor center.
