Highly praised, Denmark's largest waterfall should also be visited during a day trip to Bornholm. After all, if you're deeply impressed by the waterfalls and rapids you've already experienced in Scandinavia, you simply have to see Denmark's largest waterfall – or so we thought. Furthermore, this waterfall has been described in many publications and travel reports as the "ultimate" waterfall, which was, of course, another incentive to visit. Upon arriving at the parking lot for Døndalen Waterfall, we searched in vain for a signpost to indicate which direction to head in. There was a map in the parking lot, but it wasn't very helpful. So, we cheerfully set off in the direction from which two hikers were approaching. First, we admired the many enormous trees of various species, some of which had signs at the base of their trunks. Unfortunately, many were so weathered that they were barely legible. We were also surprised by the amount of fallen timber on the ground throughout the area, and many of the apparently very old trees had clearly seen better days. The path became increasingly adventurous, and there were no signs or markers indicating which way to go when we reached several forks in the trail. Even trying to find the waterfall using Google Maps failed, as we seemed to be led deeper and deeper into the forest, and there was no sign of a stream or path leading to a waterfall anywhere. Instead, we found more and more fallen trees and broken branches, which, according to Google Maps, we now thought led us to believe we were on the way to the actual waterfall. But the terrain became increasingly impenetrable, and suddenly we were no longer so close to our destination, as Google Maps had led us to believe, but miles away again! So, back we went to the last fork in the path. There we saw a channel that might once have been a stream, but now it consisted only of scree, fallen trees, and thick branches. Small puddles were visible in a few places, but there was no sign of Denmark's largest waterfall. Apparently, the summer heat had caused Denmark's largest waterfall to dry up! After searching for the waterfall for over an hour—it should have been just a short hike from the parking lot—we gave up and headed back. Even the return trip wasn't easy, as Google Maps kept trying to lead us further and further away from the parking lot. Luckily, we recognized some of the old trees we had admired on the way there, and so we finally found the shorter route back to the parking lot. Once there, we were quite disappointed that we hadn't found the waterfall. So, we took advantage of the tables and benches in the parking lot, which had definitely seen better days, to recover from our strenuous search. After that, we drove towards the art museum on Bornholm, but it was already closed. We then continued towards the coast and reached the Helligdomsklipperne cliffs. The sight of the rocky coast more than made up for the disaster of our search for Denmark's largest waterfall. Whether there will be another opportunity to visit Bornholm is very uncertain.
