It's one of the world's most scenic spots. Naturally, it's like seeing a traditional Chinese landscape painting in real life. It was drizzling that day, but since traditional landscape paintings often depict scenes of light rain, I later realized that a drizzly river cruise is actually best, rather than a sunny day.

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo proved to be a decidedly below-average experience, far too commercial. Four hours of sailing are far too long and tiring for what the journey actually offers: along the way, there are only a couple of noteworthy scenic spots, including the famous view depicted on the 20-yuan note, but otherwise, the landscape offers nothing particularly noteworthy or unforgettable. The atmosphere is also spoiled by the extreme overcrowding, with an excessive number of motorized boats and rafts constantly congesting the river, breaking the magic of nature and transforming what should have been a relaxing journey into a tourist assembly line. Although the boats are large and equipped with viewing decks for taking photos, the overall experience suffers significantly from this overcrowding, making it an avoidable stop or at least grossly overrated for its reputation.

🇬🇧 A boat trip on the Li River, also known as Lijiang, is perhaps one of the most beautiful and immersive natural experiences in China. You travel this river with the scenery of limestone karst mountains before your eyes, along the stretch that connects the cities of Guilin and Yangshuo. 🇬🇧 A boat trip on the Li River, also known as Lijiang, is perhaps one of the most beautiful and immersive natural experiences in China.
