About This Adventure Destination

The Last True Wilderness

Some places don’t care about your plans. The West Elk Wilderness isn’t here for your itinerary—it’s a sprawling, unapologetic expanse of volcanic rock, dense aspen forests, and meadows so wild they look like they’ve never seen a human footprint. This is the backcountry at its most unruly, where the trails meander like an afterthought and the peaks rise in sheer defiance of the horizon.

Situated north of Gunnison, Colorado, this 176,000-acre wilderness is a raw, high-altitude playground for those who crave solitude and a challenge. There are no roads, no designated campgrounds, no easy way in or out. The terrain shifts from sagebrush flats to alpine ridges, punctuated by the dark spires of the West Elk Mountains—remnants of ancient volcanic fury.

Hikers and backpackers willing to earn their views will find themselves swallowed by endless groves of aspen, where the light filters in golden and restless. The West Elk Loop, a 30-mile trek through some of the area’s most dramatic landscapes, is a test of endurance and navigation skills. Trails fade into the earth, elk bugles echo through the valleys, and the wind carries the scent of pine and rain.

For anglers, the Gunnison River and its tributaries hold elusive trout, darting through cold, fast-moving water. And if you’re here in late September, expect to see the forest set ablaze—not with fire, but with the riotous color of changing leaves.

The West Elk Wilderness demands respect. It doesn’t hand out easy rewards, but for those who step into its depths, it offers something better: silence, space, and the kind of beauty that doesn’t ask for permission.

This isn’t just a trip—it’s a conversation with the wild, and the wild always gets the last word.

Editorial Assessment

Beastly wild and beautiful wilderness. I hunt elk and bear here. It's a real challenge to outsmart the wildlife. There's nothing quite like having a big bull come real close without knowing you're there or bugling and having 6 bulls scream back at you from every direction. Having a big bear so close you can count his toes makes your hair stand on end and it's real worthwhile to hike back and enjoy nature.

Beautifully wild, even harsh at times. Love it.

I've been backpacking this wilderness for a quarter century. It is not about craggy glacial cut peaks. Instead it has high country meadows, wildflowers and quietude. Visited less than other Colorado wildernesses. Some areas overgrazed but if you go to the hidden corners, an amazing place.
