About This Adventure Destination

ʻEhukai Pillbox Trail Near Haleiwa, HI: A Coastal Hiking Gem

Located on the North Shore of Oahu near Haleiwa, ʻEhukai Pillbox Trail offers a unique outdoor hiking experience with captivating views of the Pacific Ocean and lush Hawaiian landscapes. This well-known trail leads to World War II-era concrete bunkers, known locally as "pillboxes," perched on a ridge. These pillboxes provide panoramic views along the coastline and the turquoise waves below.

The trail itself traverses a dry, grassy ridge dotted with native ironwood trees and low shrubs, offering a blend of natural beauty and historical interest. The rugged volcanic rock formations scattered along the slope add a distinctive geological element to this scenic hike. Unlike many coastal hikes that wind through dense jungle, this trail is open and sunny, providing visitors with uninterrupted ocean vistas and refreshing sea breezes.

This spot is also popular with local surfers, with the famous Banzai Pipeline visible from the trail’s summit. Although the pillboxes were originally built for military defense, they now serve as an intriguing reminder of Hawaii’s strategic past and have become one of the island's signature hiking landmarks. Overall, the ʻEhukai Pillbox Trail delivers a memorable combination of natural splendor, cultural history, and outdoor adventure right near Haleiwa town.

Wow, that was tough! I thought it would be fine after reading the comments, but it really requires a lot of stamina. The climb is grueling. It's slippery in the mud, and the trampled roots make your footing even more unstable. Plus, there's a fork in the road! Take the bigger path. There are no landmarks or signs. It takes about 30 minutes for a woman in her late 40s/early 50s. So, on the way down, prioritize safety!

Parking to access this trail was a little difficult but it was so worth it! We had a lot of fun at this trail. I had read that this was an easy hike, but I would say it's moderate. I was not able to make it all the way up to the pillbox due to being pregant and there was some steep rocks to climb. Every single view I did get to was BREATH TAKING! Do this hike! Even if it's to the first look out. You won't regret it!
