Set within the vast Bitterroot National Forest, this peak commands attention with its towering summit, dense evergreen forests, and rugged terrain. Unlike other mountains in the region, Trapper Peak combines accessibility with challenging terrain, providing striking views over the Bitterroot Valley and the surrounding rugged North Trapper Peak. This makes it a favored destination for those seeking a rewarding outdoor experience within Western Montana’s dramatic wilderness.

The hike to Trapper Peak leads visitors through varied environments—from lush forest paths to a unique, extensive boulder field that test both agility and determination. This significant rock formation, made up of large granite boulders, requires careful navigation especially in the final mile. Snow patches often remain near the summit even in summer, adding a crisp alpine character to the visit. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate sightings of elk and mountain goats common in this region, while birdwatchers may spot several species native to the Bitterroot area.

Historically, Trapper Peak was an important landmark for Indigenous tribes and early trappers in Montana, lending the peak its name. The surrounding wilderness falls within the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area, preserving its pristine condition and natural charm. The panoramic views from the top reveal shimmering alpine lakes and the expansive Bitterroot National Forest spreading far beyond, making this mountain a standout symbol of Montana’s outdoor heritage.

Trapper Peak impresses with a balance of natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and a challenging yet achievable ascent that leaves visitors with lasting memories of Montana’s wild heart.

Editorial Assessment

Trapper Peak is valued for its stunning alpine landscapes and diverse natural beauty, making it a remarkable destination. However, it lacks the global recognition of more iconic peaks, thus it scores slightly lower. A spectacular day hike with panoramic views of the bitterroot range. The hike on the plus side of easy, maybe moderate—the terrain and slope for 90% of the route are fairly easy to traverse. But there is a significant scramble up top that could wrench a knee or ankle if you aren’t careful. Once you get past that though, the summit is a dream—sweeping views of the region and, at least on my hike, no one else within sight. One of my favorite day trips from Missoula.

Hiked this peak starting from Gem Lake, you can’t see the peak from the lake but once you hit the ridgeline (June 21 I was able to use a snow chute that I assume would be a scaleable rockslide in the later months) it is easily visible in the distance. Surprisingly easy hike for how tall and rugged it is because the ridge will take you through a massive boulder field at a gentle camber along the east side of the mountain. Took 3 hours round trip from Gem lake to the peak and back to the lake. I would allot 5 to 6 hours for the whole trip if you are going to speed run it. Being on top of this peak is an unreal experience!! So beautiful and you can spot some real pretty lakes and see rugged and steep north trappper peak in front of you. 10/10 would recommend this hike! Even with littler kids you will just have to go slower for the last mile through the boulder field. Best peak I’ve hiked in the area so far! I’m rather not good with heights and was just fine too for reference.

I had the chance to hike Trapper Peak in 2020. Plan on spending a good solid afternoon hiking Trapper. Be prepared for the possibility of snow up on top, even in the Summer months. Trapper Peak is a solid hike. If you intend to hike to the peak, be prepared to hike through a boulder field for the final mile or so. Once you hit the boulder field start to look for cairns marking the remainder of the trail. Don't forget hiking poles and good shoes as the hike can be somewhat strenuous for unseasoned hikers. Bring plenty of water as there is no access to water once you hit the trail. Weather on the peak can be unpredictable so watch the conditions closely. Only attempt the hike when you have plenty of time as conditions can change rapidly and not allowing enough time can put you and your group at risk. For reference, these pictures were taken July 20, 2020. Notice the snow fields in a couple of the pictures. Also note the size of the boulders you will be traversing at the peak. Good luck, have fun and stay safe!
