Peaceful Views of Wonder Lake

Before the world hardened into stone, the land of the North was alive and pliable. Across the tundra towered Yidhten (The Great Earth Sentinel), a towering mountain giant who watched over the vast valleys. Yidhten’s heart belonged to the deepest, cold body of water in his domain: the lake called Yilchu (The Ice-Serpent). ​Yilchu was no ordinary creature; she was a sixty-foot serpent carved from pressurized blue lake-ice, with eyes like pale opal. She moved silently through the dark abyss, and Yidhten shaped the surrounding ridges to shield her home from the bitter world outside. ​Their quiet arrangement was shattered when Taz’i (The Ash-Fiend), a violent, volcanic giant from the southwestern fires, marched into the valley. Smelling the pristine cold of the lake, Taz’i sought to claim Yilchu for himself. He cast hot basalt into the water, boiling the shoreline and demanding she rise. ​Yidhten roared, sending glacier-shattering gales down the slopes to protect the lake. Taz’i retaliated by ripping open the earth, spewing sulfur and steam. The battle raged for decades, turning the alpine paradise into a wasteland of ash and ice. ​Unwilling to be a prize for either giant, Yilchu finally rose from the churning lake. She swept her tail, unleashing a blinding mist, and struck at both combatants. With a single surge, she crushed Taz’i’s burning core with freezing water and shattered the lower ridges Yidhten used to enclose her. ​Exhausted and realizing the war was destroying the land, Yidhten made a final sacrifice. He pushed himself upward into the sky, forcing his immense weight deep into the mantle. His sheer volume crushed the subterranean fire-veins, cooling Taz’i permanently into the jagged, broken stone of the surrounding mountain arc. ​His strength spent, Yidhten fell into an eternal, standing sleep, becoming the massive peak of Mount Denali. ​Yilchu retreated back into the black depths of the lake, her freedom secured. On still nights, when the surface of Wonder Lake turns to glass and reflects the sleeping face of the great mountain, visitors can still see subtle ripples in the calm water—the slow, cold breathing of Yilchu, waiting beneath the ice.

Wonder Lake is amazing with its pristine scenery, gorgeous views of Denali among the clouds. Blueberry Hill to the east of the lake gives opportunity for light to moderate hiking and fantastic views! Nighttime in summer also gives an interesting perspective
