About This Adventure Destination

Located just outside Heber City in Utah’s Wasatch Range, Big Pole Trailhead serves as a gateway to stunning mountain vistas and accessible outdoor recreation. This spot stands apart due to its commanding views of towering peaks like Mt. Timpanogos and the expansive, forested valleys that surround it. Visitors find a blend of challenging terrain and family-friendly trails winding through diverse landscapes, making it a favored destination for both hikers and mountain bikers. The area’s natural features include dense stands of pine and fir, wildflower patches in season, and chances to see local wildlife such as deer and various bird species.

Big Pole Trailhead lies within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, an area rich in ecological and cultural significance. It holds a long history with Native American tribes and later served settlers and ranchers seeking resources in the 1800s. Today, it remains an inviting spot where visitors can take in sweeping panoramas of the Wasatch Mountains while enjoying fresh air and quiet trails. One unique aspect is the mix of recreational uses; while mountain biking’s popularity has grown here, the trails retain a peaceful atmosphere most days. Dog owners appreciate the relaxed leash guidelines, though common sense is encouraged for controlling pets.

Seasonally, visitors should prepare for wet or muddy trail conditions, especially after summer rains. Despite occasional access notices restricting use to local residents, many continue to frequent this trailhead for its natural beauty and convenient location just minutes from town. Big Pole Trailhead offers a refreshing and dynamic outdoor experience for those seeking both adventure and calm among Utah’s iconic mountains.

They put up a sign on the trail (must have been recent) that basically says this trail is only open to big pole residents. Way to ruin a perfectly good trail for all but the "elite" that probably don't use it much anyways. Regardless, I'll probably keep running it.

Your dog does not need to be on a leash. Lots of folks try to tell you they do, but they don't. Use common sense, though. If you have an aggressive dog and no control, then ya, put them on a leash.
