Depending on the route this can be physically demanding but not technically challenging scramble up large lava blocks, all the way to a precarious and sketchy slip and slide. I think from the East side was the former, down the North side was the latter. Not sure about West and South routes - those are further from the dirt road though. Either way it's a fun climb and amazing views, not as impressive as The Frenchman but you'll be the only person up there. On my trip in November the most recent entry in the summit log was 6 weeks prior. There were signs that people had camped up there, that would be fun although on a windy day I'm sure it howls!

Great hike, Lava Butte is a short hike from Lake Las Vegas area, the trail is a bit tricky to find on your way up from the fire road and there is a bit of class 2 level scrambling but the hike is short and rewarding, a bit windy on the top
