Working in the Catawba County area, I had passed this park many times and finally got a chance recently to check it out. We've been twice now and will continue to visit. This is a nice, shaded park off Hwys 127 and 321 in Hickory. Very quiet and secluded, perfect for two introverted people who don't enjoy crowds. Our visits have been during the week so I can't speak for how crowded this park gets on the weekends. There are four hiking trails that circle a very nice visitor center/bathrooms. There are several picnic areas, two with a covered shelter. Near the bathrooms are a few more picnic benches and someone has built a wooden box that is full of hiking sticks for your use. I'm assuming use and return, the box is always full. This park has an historical home site with a memorial and information regarding the park's setting and history. There is one paved trail that circles around the visitor center, past a small garden area and this trail has engagement plaques for littles/elementary school aged kids. Both large picnic shelters are within an easy walk of the parking lot and bathrooms. The hiking trails themselves are moderate to strenuous. There is a reason the Appalachian Trail Conservancy lists Bakers Mtn Park as a training site. These trails are not appropriate for anyone who may have mobility issues. The 3 mile loop that circles the entire park is steep and you will find yourself at the top of a 1620 foot mountain at the midway point. This is where there is an observation deck, gazebo and picnic bench. There is also a beautiful view of North Catawba County and the mountains around Boone. The 1.5 mile trail labeled AG Clark takes you to the homestead site and past a few waterfalls, one that is fairly large. All trails are heavily shaded. The park rangers are friendly and quick to answer any questions you have. I follow Catawba County parks on FB and have seen posts regarding weekend activities for most age groups at Bakers Mtn. This will be a return trip for us in the future
