Amazing waterfalls but since the recent hurricane the path is closed off due to construction and maintenance of the path. If you’re planning to make the trip out here, just beware you won’t be able to get into the water, but the views from the bridge are still pretty amazing.

This was exactly what I was wanting when I decided to do a "waterfalls day" on Big Island. The other waterfalls like rainbow and peepee can only be experienced from a distance on a nice safe viewing platform with railings and no where to explore. I wanted to experience some falls up close and personal and Waiale trail was exactly what I wanted. This is unmarked and unmaintained, pretty wild and overgrown. I wouldn't recommend this for children or anyone with balance or mobility issues as there's a lot of climbing and scrambling required and footing and visibility are not great. It's very rewarding though to get to the top of the falls or the base of the falls. I enjoyed the hike up top for it's rainforest vibe and having to negotiate the trees and vines to get up. The hike to the base of the falls is less fun and imo more precarious just for the fact that you are having to navigate tall grass on a wet slope and can't see where to put your feet (be careful). The swim is SO worth it though. Both hikes are very short. I ran into a few people but eventually had the entire base area to myself. After the crowds and highly curated tourist experience I'd had elsewhere in HI, this "choose your own adventure" trail was a much welcome respite.
