About This Adventure Destination

Located on the southeastern coast of Oahu near Honolulu, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a uniquely breathtaking marine embayment famous for its stunning coral reef and vibrant underwater ecosystem. This crescent-shaped bay was formed within a volcanic crater, creating a sheltered habitat where diverse marine species thrive, making it one of Hawaii's premier snorkeling destinations. The clear turquoise waters and healthy coral formations provide an immersive snorkeling experience unmatched in the region. Hanauma Bay is a designated nature preserve and underwater park, dedicated to protecting its fragile ecosystem while offering visitors an intimate glance at colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, and other marine creatures. The preserve implements strict conservation guidelines including limited daily visitor numbers and mandatory education sessions to promote environmental awareness. Along the shore, golden sand beaches outline the calm lagoon, backed by rugged volcanic slopes covered in native vegetation. This blend of geological and biological richness makes Hanauma Bay special among Hawaii’s natural landmarks. Established as a protected area in 1967, this site honors both ecological preservation and local Hawaiian traditions tied to the ocean and land. Its accessibility from Honolulu allows convenient day visits to enjoy unforgettable encounters with nature’s underwater wonders combined with scenic coastal beauty. Visitors can expect well-maintained facilities, safety measures, and informative viewing points. Whether you're drawn by vibrant aquatic life or the dramatic volcanic surroundings, Hanauma Bay offers an iconic glimpse into Hawaii’s exceptional marine environment.

Editorial Assessment

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve stands out for its exceptional underwater biodiversity and volcanic origins, making it a top-tier snorkeling destination. Its emphasis on conservation and public education enhances the quality of the visitor experience. While offering a remarkable natural marine environment unique to Hawaii, its relatively small size and localized appeal keep it just below the global topmost iconic tier reserved for the largest and most geologically distinct natural formations.

Save yourself the money and DO NOT book through a third party company. Kiamana gear was not as good as cheap Walmart gear. We had to hike all the way back up to switch out our broken snorkeling gear with them to get back in the water and still have things just not work. Due to not the right size given. My husbands goggles kept filling with water in the nose area and I had to have mine so tight they dug in to the bridge of my nose in order to not leak. If you have a rental car drive yourself and rent the gear from Hunauma Bay, or just save yourself the money entirely and go to north shore! Check out sharks cove, turtle bay or the many other beaches you can snorkel and swim at for free without the “herding” and regulated feeling. In our opinion this tourist attraction was not worth the hype or money.

Great place for snorkling. Adult and kids will enjoy this place. You will find a lot of fish and if you lucky you can see turtle and seal.
