About This Adventure Destination

Manoa Falls is a striking natural waterfall located in the lush foothills near Honolulu, Hawaii. This waterfall descends nearly 150 feet down a smooth lava stone face surrounded by a dense tropical rainforest that is vibrant with native plant life. The area stands out for its rich greenery, featuring towering bamboo groves and rare Hawaiian ferns, creating a refreshing and peaceful atmosphere distinctive to Oahu’s natural beauty. The waterfall flows year-round, fed by the island’s consistent rainfall, providing a refreshing spot for visitors within a relatively short distance from Honolulu’s city center.

Beyond its scenic appeal, Manoa Falls is steeped in local legends that tell of ancient spirits inhabiting the forest, adding a cultural layer to the natural experience. Hiking here offers a chance to witness both the natural and cultural heritage of Hawaii, with the trail itself being an easy to moderate 1.6 miles out and back through waterfalls, tropical flora, and occasionally native birds. The area’s volcanic geology is evident in the rocky terrain and the smooth cliff face from which the waterfall cascades. Despite its accessibility, the falls maintain a serene vibe due to the dense surrounding vegetation that muffles city noises. Visitors appreciate the cool mist near the falls which provides relief from Hawaii’s tropical warmth.

Manoa Falls provides a short yet immersive outdoor experience unlike many others on the island, mixing convenient location, lush surroundings, and a dramatic waterfall plunge that invites both adventure seekers and those seeking a tranquil nature moment close to Honolulu.

Editorial Assessment

Manoa Falls is rated highly due to its stunning waterfall, accessibility from a major city, and the vibrant tropical environment that visitors can enjoy. While it offers a memorable experience that highlights Hawaii’s natural beauty, it is less remote and less dramatic compared to the world's most iconic natural landmarks, resulting in a strong but not top-tier score.

The falls were beautiful, however it would have been nice to know that this trail is NOT “easy.” There are a lot of rocks and dips and unfortunately, Seattle standards of a “well maintained” trail is quite different from Hawaiian standards. But I’m a dumb tourist, so I did not expect it. While I made the trail up to the falls, the kiddos in our group had to turn back. I would highly recommend to not bring young children or the elderly here unless they have extensive hiking experience. Also, you will get your shoes muddy, so don’t bring your Balenciagas or Off Whites. Just bring those decade old sneakers that need to be thrown away, just give them one more chance to put them out of their misery. It’s extremely hot and humid, and the trail is basically an all-you-can-eat buffet for the mosquitoes… and you’re the buffet. Don’t make the same mistake we did and pack bug spray.
