About This Adventure Destination

Cathedral Caverns State Park, located near Woodville in northern Alabama, stands out as an extraordinary natural attraction thanks to its vast and impressive cave system. It features the largest commercial cave entrance in the United States, a massive entryway that measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high—inviting visitors into a spectacular geological realm. Inside, the expansive caverns showcase enormous stalagmites and stalactites, captivating visitors with formations that seem sculpted by time itself.

One of the park’s most notable features is "Goliath," a towering stalagmite reaching 45 feet tall with a circumference of 243 feet, unmatched in size in many caves. Nearby, the “Frozen Waterfall,” a stunning flowstone formation, looks as though water remains suspended in mid-fall, while the “Mystery River” carves gently through the caverns. The cave formations are nestled within limestone, shaped over millions of years by natural processes that continue to mold the underground landscape.

The park officially opened in 2000, offering an accessible and well-maintained site for visitors of all ages to appreciate Alabama’s underground wonders. Beyond the caves, the surrounding park features wooded trails and camping sites, inviting guests to enjoy a full outdoor experience. Its combination of natural beauty, geological significance, and family-friendly amenities make Cathedral Caverns a must-visit destination in this region. Very beautiful cavern! Nature is absolutely amazing. It was 2 of us and our tour guide, Mason was friendly and knowledgeable. He even offered to take our photo at the end of the tour. He was patient and answered all questions. Only warning, the tour is about 1 1/5 miles in and 1 1/5 miles out. There are declines and inclines. If you have any mobility or lower extremity joint issues - be prepared. Also, there is no restroom in the cave, so go before the tour. Otherwise, what a beautiful experience.

We visited Cathedral Caverns with our two kids and absolutely loved it! Our 2-year-old was fascinated and kept saying “dinosaur,” probably because of the prehistoric look of the cave. 🦖 The rock formations are incredibly impressive, and the entire experience was way better than we expected. Our tour guide was friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. You could genuinely tell he loved his job and wanted to share as much as possible with everyone. The pathways are very well maintained and looked easily manageable with a stroller. The cave tour was amazing and unforgettable, but the beautiful nature surrounding the park makes the experience even better. Absolutely breathtaking and definitely a place worth visiting!
