About This Adventure Destination

Zavratnica: Nature's Marvel in Lika-Senj

Hidden along the coast of Croatia in the Lika-Senj region lies the breathtaking bay of Zavratnica. Just a short distance from the city of Jablanac, this natural gem captivates visitors with its deep, narrow inlet that winds dramatically between towering cliffs. No wonder it's often likened to a fjord. Zavratnica is renowned for its turquoise waters and rugged limestone formations, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike.

This spectacular spot features steep and rocky terrain, giving it a raw and wild beauty that is truly unique to the area. The bay is a part of the Velebit Nature Park, which contributes to its well-preserved natural state. There, visitors might spot endemic plant species or glimpse the occasional goat navigating the rocky slopes. Historically, this area provided a hideaway for many during wartime, and remnants of a sunken ship from World War II can still be seen beneath the clear water. Zavratnica offers not just stunning vistas but a deep sense of connection to the natural world, a place where tranquility and adventure seem to meet.

Editorial Assessment

Zavratnica's dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters offer a captivating natural setting. While it's not among the very top global icons, its unique features make it an exceptional destination in Croatia, especially for nature enthusiasts seeking beauty and tranquility.

Predivna destinacija za poludnevni izlet. Kupanje, ronjenje u smaragdno-kristalnoj vodi, potopljeni njemački brod, mali bar sa preledenim pićima.

A nice 15-minute walk along the seafront. Entrance to the swimming area costs 5 euros. It's all very beautiful, but the numerous boats make the water dirty and oily. The main problem is that even large boats enter very close to the beach. The wreck is visible only by diving. Dogs are allowed but not allowed to swim.
