About This Adventure Destination

Goodwin Lake Trailhead near Hoback Junction, Wyoming, serves as a gateway to some of the region’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. This spot stands out for its striking alpine lake, located in the foothills just outside Jackson, Wyoming—a place that offers a refreshing contrast to the surrounding rugged terrain. Goodwin Lake’s pristine, mirror-like waters provide a peaceful setting, reflecting both towering mountain peaks such as Cache Peak and Table Mountain. The trailhead itself is surrounded by dense forests and wildflower meadows that burst with color during warmer months, attracting native wildlife including deer, moose, western tanagers, and small mammals like gophers.

A defining feature of the area is the steep climb that quickly rewards hikers with sweeping views of Curtis Canyon and nearby groves along the trail. While the trail to the lake covers a manageable distance of 2–3 miles each way, continuing onward to Jackson Peak adds considerable elevation, appealing to those seeking a more challenging adventure. The region’s unique geography includes rocky slopes and occasional snow patches well into June, hinting at its high-elevation character.

Historically, this area has been treasured by outdoor enthusiasts due to its relatively uncrowded trails and unspoiled scenery, offering genuine quiet and solitude compared to busier nearby destinations like Grand Teton National Park.

Access requires a rugged drive on Curtis Canyon Road, best suited for vehicles with high clearance, which keeps visitor numbers moderate and helps maintain the trail’s peaceful atmosphere. Visitors often mention the lack of facilities here, so carrying essentials is important. For those who make the trip, Goodwin Lake Trailhead offers a memorable retreat into Wyoming’s impressive wilderness.

When coming down the trail I realized how steep it was on the way up. I'm trying Ashley hell out of the parking lot. You can't arrange with beautiful views of table mountain once past the lake. There's beautiful views up towards the groove on mountains including cache peak. Hiking to lake doesn't seem too time consuming, going all the way to Jackson peak adds an extra thousand feet of vehicle.

Five star hike one star road!! We drove up Curtis canyon mid June. Lots of rain this june 2023, so lots of healthy mosquitoes!! There is a dirt parking area that fits 10 cars or so. Trail goes up 2 or 3 miles to pond. Still lots of snow in mid June and lake was mostly frozen. So we scrambled up a rock slide to an overlook of the pond. Saw some pics, gophers, and some beautiful western tanagers. They know they are handsome and will pose for you;)

The 1.6-km/1-mile stretch from the fork of the road to the trailhead requires high clearance and/or 4wd, so please factor that into your planning. Otherwise, gorgeous trails and backcountry await you! There are no toilets or facilities at the TH.
