Serenity at String Lake, Wyoming

String Lake is one of the most popular places in Grand Teton National Park for paddleboards and kayaks. Paddleboards seem to be everywhere during the summer, along with kayakers and plenty of people simply swimming and enjoying the lake. As the author of the Jackson Hole Hiking Guide, I’ve spent a lot of time here over the years. String Lake is relatively shallow, which helps make it particularly inviting during the warmer months. I’ve even done triathlon training here, combining swimming with the surrounding trails and roads. The setting is spectacular. Mount Teewinot rises dramatically behind the lake, and depending on where you are along the shoreline, you can find some beautiful views across the water toward the Tetons. There’s a hiking trail that loops around String Lake, and the trail system also connects into much larger adventures toward Leigh Lake, Paintbrush Canyon, and other parts of the park. Multiple access points around the lake make it easy to find different places to reach the shoreline. As the author of 50 Jackson Hole Photography Hotspots, I also love String Lake for photography. Calm water, reflections, forested shorelines, people paddling across the lake, and Teewinot towering in the background provide a huge variety of compositions. This is definitely not a secret location. During peak summer, String Lake can become extremely popular with swimmers, paddleboarders, kayakers, hikers, and families spending the day near the water. Parking can require some patience during the busiest periods. Whether you’re coming to hike, swim, paddle, photograph the Tetons, or simply relax beside the water, String Lake is one of the most enjoyable and accessible places to spend time in Grand Teton National Park.

A great spot for boating! Kids friendly!

String Lake is an amazing, beautiful place for paddle boarding and kayaking with crystal-clear, blue glacier water! It is fantastic for kids as well since there isn't a lot of deep water, making it a very accessible and fun spot for families. You can also find great fishing downstream where the water connects toward Leigh Lake or Jenny Lake. Parking is decent, but because it's such a popular spot, you definitely want to get there very early to secure a parking spot smoothly. An absolute favorite and a must-visit spot in the Grand Tetons!
