Beautiful views and where we started backpacking on the Teton Crest Trail

My wife and I stayed in Teton Village in late August, partially to gain access to the hikes at the top of the Aerial Tram. The tram is basically a public-private partnership as the trails and ski slopes are primarily in National Forest lands. The trails also all seem to correspond to ski slopes, are named as such, and generally have ratings like Black Diamond, etc. Keep in mind that if you take the Tram up, it brings you to the highest point, so any hiking or walking will be downhill until you decide to come back up again to catch the Tram back down. My wife and I chose to do several of the moderate hikes combined into a long loop. The scenery was excellent, but the maps and even the trail markers left a little to be desired. We got off trail at least once amongst the rocks around Rock Springs and had to scamper up a hill to join a different trail. The Rock Springs loop was generally very pretty all the way down as it wound through varying landscapes. The way back up was very utilitarian as it was just a couple of gravel switchbacks the ski resort uses as a road. Overall, it was nice to do some hikes in otherwise inaccessible areas. A lot of people rode the tram, but few actually hiked. Many just walked around, took some pictures, and ate some waffles. So, once we got out on the trails, we didn't encounter too many people.

I went in the sweltering heat of August, but the mountaintop was very cool. The view was wide open, and it was also nice to be able to admire one of the Teton peaks from the side.
