About This Adventure Destination

Union Pass, located in Wyoming’s Wind River region, is a high mountain corridor with a rich blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Sitting at over 9,200 feet in elevation, it connects the Wind River Range with the Absaroka Mountains, creating a unique intersection of landscapes that draws visitors seeking breathtaking views and outdoor experiences. This pass stands out due to its wide, sweeping vistas of towering peaks, dense forests, and colorful golden aspen groves that brighten the slopes each autumn.

The terrain features remarkable Pleistocene glacial formations, with smooth rock surfaces and moraines revealing ancient geological activity. In addition to its stunning natural elements, Union Pass served as a crucial travel route for Native American tribes and later pioneers, making it an area with deep cultural roots. Visitors can find a well-preserved interpretive site that shares stories about the pass’s historical importance and the wildlife that migrates through this corridor—including elk, moose, and occasionally grizzly bears.

One of the unique characteristics of Union Pass is its remote and less-traveled nature. The road crossing the pass offers rugged adventure fairly accessible only to those with high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles, adding to the sense of wilderness and solitude. The surrounding forests are filled with diverse flora, including lodgepole pine and fir, enriching the ecological diversity. For photographers and nature lovers, every turn provides an opportunity to witness dramatic mountain scenery few places can match, especially with the calm stillness that fills this alpine setting.

Union Pass invites travelers in Wyoming to connect with both nature and history in a raw, unforgettable environment.

Unbelievable scenery! Long drive! Pay attention to your route, easy to take a wrong turn. I took it from Debois to Cora and then through Bondurant to Jackson and over Togwehee Pass back to Debois

I drove from Jackson east toward Pinedale, then north on 352 and 263 over Union Pass to Dubois and back on 26. I suggest a high clearance vehicle but the road is in great shape for 85% of the route (my average speed was 25mph). The interpretive site at Union Pass was well done and really interesting. What a unique geographical spot!

Went over this as a kid about 1970. We travelled in a regular 2W drive pickup and camper (my dad was an experienced backcountry driver). Magnificent, as is so much of the West. If there are only 2 other reviews it must not be travelled very much.
