About This Adventure Destination

The Pekoe Trail by Serendipity Trails offers a refreshing outdoor experience in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, near the bustling city of Kandy. This trail is renowned for its rich greenery and panoramic views over verdant tea plantations, stretching across rolling hills and distant mountains. Unlike typical hiking paths, the Pekoe Trail gently winds through organized terraces of tea bushes that appear as neat rows of bright green against the landscape, providing a unique glimpse into the region’s agricultural heritage and natural beauty. Along the way, visitors can delight in the cool mountain air as well as the diverse plant life typical to this altitude, including native trees and shrubs that host various bird species. The trail goes through areas where tea plucking is still practiced in traditional ways, giving a cultural edge to the trek. Rain clouds frequently hover low in the sky, creating dramatic contrasts of light and shadow over the hills. Unlike standard forest treks, this route offers a mix of natural scenery and cultivated land that narrates the local way of life tied closely to the tea industry—an integral part of Sri Lanka’s economy and identity. The Pekoe Trail’s moderate elevation and well-maintained paths make it accessible for travelers looking to connect with nature without venturing too far from urban comforts. This blend of nature, culture, and active farming landscapes makes it a standout destination for those curious about the region’s unique environmental and economic backdrop.

Editorial Assessment

The Pekoe Trail offers a unique mix of natural beauty and cultural significance with its scenic tea plantations and mild hiking path, making it a worthy destination. However, it ranks moderate on the iconic scale due to its smaller scale and regional appeal rather than global natural uniqueness or geological prominence.

It's definitely not worth the money. Easy to follow (just the signs, but there's also a good app), you pass through tea fields and a few villages. There's nothing in the central section, so it's a good idea to bring water and some snacks. The weather was very changeable, and during the rainy periods, we saw several leeches. I didn't find any particularly breathtaking views; the road is always beaten, and tuk-tuks and motorbikes often pass by. Getting back is also difficult if you don't have a driver. With two children, it took us almost 5 hours, but we took many breaks and walked slowly.
