About This Adventure Destination

Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, located in the lush Kaneohe region on the island of Oahu, offers visitors a remarkable 400-acre green sanctuary set against the stunning Koʻolau Mountain Range. Created in 1982, this garden stands out in Hawaii for its diverse collection of tropical plants from regions around the world, including the Philippines, Africa, and Sri Lanka, providing a rare glimpse into global flora within a Hawaiian setting. Each themed section invites visitors to appreciate the variety and uniqueness of plants organized by geographical origin, making every stroll an educational and relaxing experience.

One of the garden’s highlights is the peaceful reflecting lake, home to vibrant koi and gentle ducks, offering perfect spots for photography or quiet contemplation. The expansive grounds feature flat, well-maintained trails suitable for casual walking in comfortable footwear, allowing guests of all ages to enjoy the natural beauty without strenuous hiking. With large grassy areas and shaded picnic spots available, the garden is a favorite place for families and friends to gather and unwind.

Visitors can also learn about native Hawaiian plants used in traditional customs, adding a cultural layer to the visit. Bird watchers frequently spot native and migratory species flitting through the treetops, while the garden’s education center provides maps, guided tour options, and informative displays to enrich the visit. Whether wandering among giant palms, admiring lush mountain views draped in clouds, or spending a peaceful afternoon by the lake, Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden offers a refreshing and rejuvenating outdoor retreat on Oahu’s windward side.

You can only get around by car. There's parking at each spot, but not much for hiking. It's mostly for taking pictures without much walking. We also wanted to go to the lake, but the road was closed, so we couldn't get there either. If you just like the views and don't want to hike, this place is for you, but I prefer hiking.
