Whether for the challenge, the beauty, or the history, this trailhead is a standout destination for outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Black Hills.

Editorial Assessment

Black Elk Peak is an exceptional site due to its natural beauty, panoramic views, and historical significance, but as a mountain within a larger national forest, it doesn't achieve the uniqueness required for a top global icon rating.

We hiked this trail with our 4 children ranging in age from 8-14. Everyone was able to complete the 7 mile hike. We took trail #9 up and trail #4 down. We packed lunch and ate it at the top near the fire watch tower. We started our hike around 8am and it took us 3hours to complete. The trail was pretty busy especially on our way down. The path is fairly wide, so there was room to pass people and stop when needing a break. The elevation is a little over 7,000 feet, but we didn’t notice that too much. The trail is marked well and easy to follow. The views at the top were amazing even with some wildfire smoke
