About This Adventure Destination

Little Missouri State Park, located near Killdeer in western North Dakota, offers a remarkable experience amid the striking badlands terrain. This vast park is shaped by centuries of erosion, featuring rugged hills, deep ravines, and dramatic cliffs unique within the region. The Little Missouri River meanders through the landscape, adding a dynamic water element to the striking geological formations. Visitors will encounter a diverse mix of prairie grasslands and pockets of trees, with wildlife including bison and deer frequently spotted throughout the area.

With over 47 miles of trails carved into the badlands, the park attracts hikers, horseback riders, and nature lovers who seek an authentic outdoor experience away from urban crowds. The park’s combination of bold rock formations, vibrant colors, and scenic river views make it a distinct destination for those interested in geology and natural history. Its origins date back to the mid-20th century when it was established to protect this unique landscape and provide recreational opportunities.

Campers appreciate the chance to stay close to nature with spacious tent sites near the river and horse-friendly amenities such as corrals and wide riding trails. Some visitors have noted that the campground’s facilities include picnic tables, fire pits, vault toilets, and pay showers, with friendly staff maintaining the area. Though shade is limited and the dirt access road can be rough in places, the park’s peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking vistas make it a favored stop on trips across the North Dakota badlands region.

Whether capturing sunrise colors over the ridges or watching wildlife along the river, Little Missouri State Park offers an impressive outdoor setting that stands out in the Northern Plains.

Little Missouri State Park scores well due to its unique badlands terrain, extensive trail options, and peaceful camping opportunities, although its relative obscurity on the international stage keeps it below a higher rating. If you like crowds the camper/cabin scene is intense. Tent camping area was lovely and spacious...bc there were only 2 tents. Thank goodness bc most of the tent area, although lovely with lots of trees and right on the water, is mostly very hilly...only room for maybe 4 tents...and only about 4 moveable tire rim fire pits anyway. Great weekend but no need to go again, unless a last minute easy thing. Showers and vault toiltes need painting and new floors and doors but they're fixing up things. Nice new bar and entertainment area.

We were told that water & electric was available on a large available site. We entered on a two mile dirt road that is capable of traffic one way to the park. A very beautiful park EXCEPT not for a 40 foot motorhome. Only electricity was available and on an uneven lot. Great for small campers, tents & horse trails. Park host misinformed us of the ability to handle a large rig…Had to leave!

Dakota state parks are quite expensive for what they are. Lots of flies maybe because of the horses. No shade and windy and dusty. For the high price you’d think the showers would be free. Not. Pit toilets.
