The Majestic Zongo Falls

Great destination! Enjoyed the open trail and peaceful outdoor atmosphere.

You step out of your 4x4 into the dense damp air of Central Congo, the roar of the Inkisi River growing louder with every step down the dirt trail. As you break through the thick jungle canopy, the Chutes de Zongo reveal themselves: a massive 65-meter wall of water thundering over dark volcanic rock into the chasm below. * The Sights: A towering curtain of white water crashes with incredible force, shooting a huge column of mist high into the sky. Light catches the water vapor to throw brilliant rainbows across the canyon. Lush rainforest frames every angle, with wooden lookouts clinging to the cliff edge to give you a front-row view of the drop. * The Atmosphere: The sheer volume of water generates its own localized weather—within minutes, the heavy mist soaks through your shirt and leaves your skin dripping. The air smells intensely fresh, rich with damp soil, tropical foliage, and wet stone, accompanied by a permanent, deep thrumming roar that vibrates right through your chest. * The Experience: Standing on the observation deck feels like standing in a tropical rainstorm. Walking down toward the riverbank gives you a humbling sense of scale as the spray washes over you. It's a striking contrast to the dusty, chaotic four-hour drive from Kinshasa. The Verdict: An invigorating, power-packed escape into the Congolese rainforest. It’s a spectacular show of raw hydrologic force and easily one of the most memorable nature trips in the region.

Des notes pour y arriver en autonomie en utilisant les services publics. Du centre de Kinshasa il faut prendre un minibus qui se dirige à UPN. Il y en a beaucoup. Depuis UPN (Université Pédagogique) il est normalement possible de trouver un minibus ou une voiture qui arrive à Kisantu. Si c’est pas le cas il faut un autre transport jusqu’à Matadi Kibala (assez proche). Sur le minibus qui vous emmènera à Kisantu il faut demander au chauffeur de vous déposer en correspondance de la route qui va à Zongo. Là il est facile de trouver des motos qui vous ramèneront jusqu’à l’hôtel Seli Safari et à la cascade; le prix de la moto peut varier entre 30 et 40.000 Fr., ne payez pas plus cher que ça. Partez du centre de Kinshasa vers 6h du matin, parce que c’est à cette heure là qu’il y a le plus de transport commun et le trajet pour Kisantu et très lent, surtout les premiers 40 km à cause aussi d’une gare de péage très mal organisé qui produit d’énormes bouchons, à côté du fait que la route nationale traverse des marchés… Vous trouverez très facilement une moto pour le retour: ça suffit de demander un moment au gens au lodge. En plus, à un km e demi de Seli Safari (en sortant à gauche à la fin de la route cimentée) il y a un village (bière froide à 4.500) où c’est plein de motos!
