The Mountain Lakes Wilderness is a less traveled gem of the region. The wilderness is a 6 mile by 6 mile square that is true wilderness. There are three official access points that are well marked with Forest Sevice maps. Varney Creek and Clover Creek are the two most popular access point situated on the north and south center points. All access points will start at lower elevations and you will pay your dues to bag a peak or rim edge, but it is well worth the effort. The Mountain Lakes is well known for its mosquito squadran. If you must travel early summer or even into August, be warned the mosquitos are in numbers you will never forget. Late summer and into fall is by far the best time to get on the hills. Do your homework and plan your trip to your ability. While it is not seen on the trail maps the hookup to the summit of Aspen Butte is some of the best views around.
