If you don’t have a 4WD vehicle, you can still get up Handies if you park at the alternate trailhead. You can find the route on AllTrails. Park about a half mile before Animas Forks. The alternate route is just under 10 miles and connects with the American Basin trail about halfway up. The road is still rough to get to this alternate trailhead but very doable with careful driving, good tires, and a desire for adventure. I did it in a Prius with A/T tires. If you’re up for a big day, keep going down the northeast trail from Handies and connect to the Redcloud & Sunshine trail for a big 14er triple. I was able to hitchhike back from the trailhead to my car after. Most of the off road vehicle drivers were super nice and happy to give me a lift or at least check to make sure I was okay!
