My wife and I recently did this out and back hike up Youngs Mountain Trailhead! WOW, what's beautiful hike! Young's Mountain Trailhead is actually located in a gated community in Lake Lure, NC. Due to the trail being in a gated community there is very limited parking - so only a few parking passes are issued daily through Conserving Carolina Conserving. Apply online and if approved they will send you a gate code to gain access into the property. This trail was created by Conserving Carolina whose mission is to protect, restore, and inspire appreciation of the natural world. They have protected over 46,000 acres in an amazing part of western NC and upstate SC. They are actively restoring wildlife habitat, creating new trails and greenways, and engaging people with the outdoors. You can Google them to obtain this parking pass. Youngs Mountain Trail is a new 2.1-mile hiking trail (4.2 miles round-trip) located on the north side of Lake Lure. It ascends 1,200 feet in elevation to reach the top of scenic cliffs near the summit of the mountain. This dramatic destination offers panoramic views of Lake Lure, Rumbling Bald, Weed Patch Mountain, and the lower Hickory Nut Gorge. On a clear day, Mt. Mitchell and the Black Mountains are also visible. This trail traverses 437 acres of land protected by Conserving Carolina. It is the newest addition to the emerging Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail network, and will one day connect to other trails, including the nearby Weed Patch Mountain Trail. The Youngs Mountain Trail also represents a likely future connection between the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail and the proposed Wilderness Gateway State Trail, which will ultimately extend as far east as Hickory. These pictures don't accurately depict the danger of this trail. It was an incredible hike, but I wouldn't recommend taking dogs or kids due to major exposed cliffs along the path. One misstep and you could be in serious trouble! Despite the risks, it is a beautiful place that requires extreme caution. In fact, our daughter who is now a Caldwell County Sheriff Swat Paramedic and a wilderness certified paramedic assisted in the rescue of someone who fell off of one of the cliffs. Length: 4.2 miles out-and-back (2.1 miles each way) Difficulty: Strenuous Great For: Views, Wildflowers, Wildlife
