Heard about this hike on instagram and had to try. First you have to go to conserving Carolina.org and apply for a permit, it is free but the trailhead is inside a gated community, so keep the original email you get because the directions and gate code are in that email. This hike was pretty, somewhat strenuous at times, lots of steps and rocks, I believe it was 1200 feet altitude gain. We went late November so all the tree leaves covered the ground but the path is well blazed. The summit was really cool and you could see lake lure in the distance as well as some huge golf course. I heard that 360 views were at the summit, but we only saw about 180, unless we missed something. I would hike this again as we LOVED that we only saw one other person on the trail, but it’ll be nice n the spring or fall. Also the maps said this was 2.1 miles one way, but we found it was more like 2.5+. The total out and back was 5.3 miles

Youngs Mountain Trail is located just northeast of Lake Lure, NC is a 4.2 mile roundtrip/out-and-back, hard/moderate hiking trail to several scenic cliffs along the summit of Youngs Mountain. The trail gains 1,200 feet--most of it is in the middle section of the trail covering one mile of distance. The trail also has several areas of exposure at cliff edges. Trails are often narrow, goat-paths which is great fun. Dramatic views from the top include Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge. The top is totally awesome! Treking poles would be advised. Be aware Youngs Mountain Trail has very limited parking and is accessed inside of a gated neighborhood. So, don't wait until the last moment to reserve your free online parking ticket. The permit will contain the gate code to enable entry and give all instructions needed to know. One permit is per vehicle and per hiker.
