Discover the Magic of Smithbrook Trailhead

Great destination! Enjoyed the open trail and peaceful outdoor atmosphere.

No pass required. No toilet

Time of the post: the first week of October. Pass: Not required. Parking: Limited in the parking lot but plenty of spaces along the road. Difficulty(for Mt McCausland): Moderate before the last half miles that goes up to the mountain, after that Hard. Equipment: Hiking poles highly recommended, especially for the mountain. Waterproof boots are not required in autumn, only a few spots that’s wet. Note: 1. The entrance to the trailhead is on the left side of highway if you are driving west to east. The exit is easy to miss and sometimes it’s hard to exit because you’re driving on the left lane, be prepared to slow down near the exit. 2. No cellular data or weak signal near the trailhead and parts of highway. It is usually to download the map or guides before you leave. 3. The 1-2 mile driving from highway exit to the trailhead is pretty bumpy. SUV isn’t required though, drive slow. 4. No toilet so be prepared. 5. If you are going Mt McCausland. You just follow the people or sign to the lake Valhalla trail. After around 3 miles, you will suddenly see a colorful meadow of low berry bushes(Pic 1). If you make a right turn, you will see the road that climb up to the mountain. If you go straight, that’s the trail to the lake. 6. If you didn’t bring hiking poles or not feel comfortable to climb up to the top of the mountain, the best view is actually half way towards to the top, so you don’t have to climb to the top. If you didn’t finish it, the top of the view is in the last Pic(a peak of tiny Dow Lake).

Really lovely day hike up to Lake Valhalla. The switchbacks at the beginning can be a little taxing, but they taper off into a more moderate climb with a very rewarding view at the end. Bring plenty of water and sturdy shoes (and if you plan to use the pit toilet at the lake, bring your own TP!)
