About This Adventure Destination

Located just southwest of the vibrant city of Littleton, Colorado, Waterton Canyon Trailhead offers a captivating entry point to a scenic canyon carved by the South Platte River. This outdoor area stands out as a tranquil retreat where visitors can experience a blend of rugged landscapes and peaceful waterways within easy reach of the Denver metropolitan area. The canyon itself is defined by striking granite rock formations and steep slopes covered in juniper and pinyon pine, creating an evocative backdrop that is both dramatic and inviting.

Waterton Canyon is renowned for the South Platte River running through it, offering glimpses of native trout and abundant wildlife like deer and bald eagles, making it a unique ecological spot in the Front Range. Historically, the area once supported water diversion for the city’s supply, and remnants of old mining roads trace back to the 19th century, adding a touch of regional heritage. The trailhead marks the start of a generally flat, well-maintained path leading through the canyon along the riverbank, making it accessible for walkers, cyclists, and families.

Clear blue skies often contrast with the canyon’s warm earth tones, while wildflowers bloom seasonally, enhancing the natural palette. Waterton Canyon’s proximity to Littleton allows visitors to easily combine peaceful nature walks with nearby urban amenities. Whether it’s the varied terrain or the chance to spot wildlife, this trailhead is a standout location for those looking to immerse themselves in Colorado’s natural beauty without venturing far from the city.

Editorial Assessment

Waterton Canyon Trailhead offers a beautiful and accessible natural experience with scenic river views, abundant wildlife, and a peaceful setting near an urban area. Though widely appreciated locally and excellent for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and fishing, it does not display the striking geological uniqueness or scale found in the world's most iconic natural landmarks. Its moderate rating reflects its excellent recreational value balanced with a more common landscape type within Colorado.

We love riding our bike here. It’s an easy ride and a beautiful canyon . Come early in the summer before the crowds and the heat. We see bighorn, sheep almost every time we come, but be aware there’s no phone service in the canyon and we did have an emergency and we had to find a phone. There are a couple of call boxes. I think one near the beginning of the canyon and one near the house at the end.
