About This Adventure Destination

Clifty Falls State Park, located near Madison in southern Indiana, is a striking destination celebrated for its impressive waterfalls and rugged terrain. This park stands out in the region thanks to its dramatic limestone cliffs carved by Clifty Creek, which plunge into deep gorges creating several notable waterfalls. Visitors find a unique combination of geological history and natural beauty here, with trails that wind through forests, alongside rapids, and past cascading water that changes with the seasons.

Key features include Big Clifty Falls, the park’s signature waterfall, which drops powerfully over rocky ledges revealing layered sandstone and limestone. Visitors also encounter smaller but equally charming falls like Hoffman Falls and Tunnel Falls, where a historical railroad tunnel adds intrigue to the hike. The diverse flora includes vibrant spring wildflowers and colorful fall foliage, while fauna such as songbirds and small mammals enrich the experience for nature lovers.

Established in 1920, the park preserves both natural wonders and local heritage, offering picnic areas, a nature center, and camping facilities. Seasonal variations impact the water flow, making springtime the peak period for witnessing the falls at full strength. Recent visitor reports commend the well-marked trails, accessible paved roads, and scenic viewpoints—some accommodating wheelchair users. The park appeals to hikers of all skill levels, with options ranging from brief canyon overlooks to challenging climbs within the gorge.

Whether visiting for a short day trip or an overnight stay, Clifty Falls State Park offers a refreshing retreat where the raw beauty of Indiana’s landscape is on full display. Its waterfalls, trails, and natural surroundings make it a memorable highlight in the scenic Ohio River region.

Super clean park. Lots of views and trails. A lot of the trails have wooden stairs. Some steps are steep so beware.
