About This Adventure Destination

Escondido Falls, located in Malibu, California, is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Santa Monica Mountains and a favored destination for outdoor lovers. This remarkable natural site features a two-tier waterfall: the easily accessible lower falls and the captivating upper falls, which drops nearly 150 feet. The waterfall is surrounded by vibrant greenery, including native sycamores, oaks, and seasonal wildflowers that bring the canyon to life throughout the year.

The hike to the falls begins on the Escondido Canyon Trail, a gently rising path that crosses several clear streams and charming ponds, making the journey refreshing and scenic. Hikers often enjoy the shaded walk beneath a canopy of trees, which keeps temperatures comfortable even on sunny days. The rocky sandstone cliffs and sandy creek beds highlight the geology of the area, reflecting the natural forces that have shaped Malibu’s rugged coastline and inland terrain.

Escondido Falls offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and tranquility that stands out in the Los Angeles region. Its two waterfalls provide different experiences—while the lower falls are popular for a short visit, reaching the upper falls is a rewarding challenge for those prepared to continue a bit further. Wildlife sightings are common here, with birds and small animals active in the lush canyon. This spot remains a favorite for both locals and visitors seeking a peaceful outdoor retreat with photo-worthy views and splash-worthy pools.

Was a great hiking spot. Still is, but has been cut down to an easy short hike. Use to be able to climb up the hill and see another water fall, then climb further to see others, but its been blocked off by wires now. Whoever lives up top now must not like the hikers being able to walk around up there near their property now. Very unfortunate.

Moderate hike, mild elevation, easy path. Time: ~1.5 hrs Parking in small lot ~10 cars for $12 or free parking across the two lane highway (a little dangerous but free) Nice California dusty trail with winding path, some water crossings. Waterfall and trail was a little underwhelming. 1/3 of the hike is through the neighborhood on a nicely marked path.

Just did this hike and good for going outside but theres better You either park on the street or on a small parking lot in the front $12 all day. Dont go up the residential road driving theres no where to park up there. But you will have to walk about a mile up the road to start the trail. Its not a difficult one and the water fall was pretty dry. We only made it up the first one total about 1.5 hrs there and back
