Located within the expansive Pisgah National Forest, this trail section stands out for its natural diversity and striking ridgeline views across the Blue Ridge Mountains. At roughly 3,760 feet elevation, Sams Gap serves as a gateway to both moderate and challenging hikes, connecting hikers to the impressive summit of Big Bald and beyond. The route is lined with native Appalachian flora such as rhododendrons and towering hemlocks, adding color and texture through the seasons.

Hikers here will find well-maintained paths that vary from gentle wooded stretches to steep, rocky ascents. The trail leads to open meadows and overlooks that deliver sweeping 360-degree vistas, perfect for rest and reflection. This location is rich in cultural history too, originally part of ancient routes used by Native American tribes and early settlers who crossed these mountains. Sams Gap retains its role as a crucial mountain passage, now cherished by those trekking one of America’s longest trails.

Great access point. I hiked to Big Bald and got none of the views due to a storm that rolled in. Hiked back in the rain and left my Goodr sunglasses on a rock when changing into my rain jacket. I hope someone found them and gets good use out of them in the future.
