Warning: Guides did not act on my descent request for 12+ hours despite clear communication. My condition deteriorated significantly during this wait, resulting in helicopter evacuation and hospital transfer on December 31st. A brief timeline of events Camp 2 to 3: Already experiencing stomach issues, I asked another climber for Tums. A guide intervened aggressively and told me to remove my backpack before speaking to anyone. At Camp 3: The Guides told me to drink more water or I wouldn’t summit, despite my ongoing stomach issues. Seven hours later I told guides I didn’t feel great and needed to descend. This was around 3am on summit day The lead guide responded: “Someone will come to get you in 12 to 24 hours to take you down.” A portter arrived — nearly 12 hours later to take us down — I was forced to descend from Camp 3 to base camp with no food or water in my system for upwards of a day. I would advise using caution when booking with AMG, or at the very least research which guides will be leading your expedition before confirming your booking Just to add on given the updated response from them Update following AMG’s response: I want to address several inaccuracies and also correct one of my own. The person who assisted my descent was a certified Porter-Guide, a qualified mountain guide, not a regular porter as I had implied. I acknowledge this inaccuracy. AMG states their guides made the call not to summit and prioritized my descent — this is incorrect. I made the decision not to summit and communicated to the guides that I needed to go down. Their response was to tell me someone would come in 12 to 24 hours. I also want to acknowledge that I was using a double concentration of chlorine tablets, which likely contributed to my initial stomach issues. However this does not change the core concern: after communicating I needed to descend, I waited over 12 hours while my condition deteriorated. I want to note that I had been experiencing stomach issues since Camp 2 and had informed the guides of this. The deterioration at Camp 3 was not sudden or unpredictable — it was a progression of symptoms the guiding team had been made aware of and had not adequately addressed. AMG states my condition was not an emergency at the time of assessment. I would note that it became one during the 12 hours I spent waiting for assistance — a deterioration that occurred entirely while under their supervision and care. If weather was a factor preventing my descent, I would ask why summit attempts were being made on the mountain simultaneously. The only formal medical evaluation I received was conducted by independent park medical staff — not AMG. That evaluation resulted in immediate helicopter evacuation. That medical record speaks for itself.
