Start your journey at the Kane Creek Trailhead, located just 2.5 miles from Moab. The hike is approximately 2 miles round-trip, classified as moderate but with some steep sections. Elevation gain reaches about 980 feet, making it challenging but manageable for most hikers.

The hike begins with a steady climb along uneven terrain, offering immediate views of the towering red cliffs characteristic of the region. As the trail ascends, the Colorado River emerges in view, meandering through the canyon below. At the overlook, you're greeted with sprawling views of Moab Valley, Arches National Park, and the La Sal Mountains in the distance.

The Portal Overlook provides perspectives rarely seen from other points in the area. The dramatic drop-offs at the overlook make the scenery feel larger than life. For photography enthusiasts, the light cast over Moab at sunrise or sunset provides unforgettable shots.

The Portal area is named for its location near the entrance to the Colorado River Canyon. This spot was historically significant as an early route for miners and settlers traversing through eastern Utah. Keep an eye out for small wildlife, such as lizards and birds of prey, which are often seen along the cliffs. The trail's steep sections can provide a sense of adventure but require careful attention to footing.

From Moab, drive west on Kane Creek Blvd; the trailhead is well-marked and just a 10-minute drive from town.
