South Cumberland State Park

South Cumberland State Park, located near Monteagle in Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau region, offers visitors a striking landscape of rugged cliffs, deep gorges, and cascading waterfalls that stand apart from other outdoor destinations in the area. Covering over 30,000 acres, this park features multiple natural areas that highlight the region’s unique geological heritage and biodiversity. Among its well-known features is the Fiery Gizzard Trail, a challenging 12-mile path famed for its rocky terrain, breathtaking overlooks, and numerous waterfalls that provide refreshing breaks along the route. The trail’s near-pristine condition and minimal man-made structures give hikers a feeling similar to being in a national park. Another highlight is Savage Gulf, a deep canyon visited for its sweeping views, towering cliffs, and 55 miles of rugged trails. Stone Door is an impressive sandstone crevice extending 100 feet high, offering panoramic vistas over the valley below. It’s a popular spot for photos, especially near sunset. Established in 1978, South Cumberland preserves a landscape steeped in natural beauty and outdoor recreation history.
