About This Adventure Destination
Deep within the rugged expanse of Pisgah National Forest, the Woodruff Ridge Trail (#256) offers mountain bikers a challenging and rewarding experience. This 2.3-mile singletrack near Mortimer, North Carolina, is renowned for its technical terrain, scenic creek crossings, and the opportunity to connect with other notable trails in the Wilson Creek area.
Starting from Anthony Creek Road near the community of Globe, the trail ascends alongside Woodruff Branch, a stream that provides a serene backdrop to the initial climb. The ascent is demanding, featuring "up-tech" sections with rocky features and challenging creek crossings that test even seasoned riders. As you gain elevation, the trail intersects with Barn Ridge Road (FSR 4081), offering options to extend your ride or loop back.
The upper section of Woodruff Ridge is characterized by dense laurel thickets and old roadbeds, leading to a small clearing at the intersection with Edgemont Road. From here, riders can access Upper Wilson Ridge and Schoolhouse Ridge Road (FSR 4068), creating opportunities for longer, more adventurous routes. The descent back down Woodruff Ridge is exhilarating, with technical rock gardens, natural slabs, and a notable feature known as "Optimus Crux"—a rock slab above a waterfall that requires precise navigation to avoid an unintended dip.
Recent maintenance efforts have focused on improving trail sustainability while preserving its technical character. The Northwest North Carolina Mountain Bike Alliance, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, has been instrumental in these enhancements, ensuring that Woodruff Ridge remains a favorite among the local mountain biking community.
