Majestic Majesty: Mount Kilimanjaro

I was lucky enough to witness twilight in all its phases including the astronomical, nautical and civil dawn. I got a very good view of mount Kilimanjaro and the observed change in illumination across the horizon from a darkened side of the planet to a glistening one (filled with soft sweet light) was truly magical.

The glaciers on Mount Kilimanjaro are still melting rapidly and are in danger of disappearing. It is estimated that more than 80% of them have disappeared compared to 100 years ago, and it is predicted that most of them may be gone by around 2040-2050. The glaciers in danger of disappearing have decreased dramatically compared to the early 20th century, with a particularly significant reduction in thickness and area near the summit. Scientific estimates predict that if the current warming trend continues, the ice on the summit will be completely gone by around 2035-2050, or even 2060. We titled these comments Kilimanjaro, but inexplicably, the spellchecker changed it to Kilimangiaro! In February 1979, we climbed from Marangu, passing through Mandara, Horombo, Kibo, and on the last night, we reached the summit at 6:00 AM. It had snowed that night, and it was a bit cold. Obviously, from the summit, the view stretches far and wide over the plains on both the Tanzanian and Kenyan sides. A mystical experience, although the technical difficulties are nonexistent, and the entire route is very easy, free of any danger. The descent is interesting, first through a lunar landscape, and then the vegetation takes center stage with unique plant species. There were five of us on the climb those three days, although nowadays, 47 years later, I imagine hundreds of people reach the summit, and I don't think it's so pleasant to be constantly surrounded by such a crowd. The world has changed, and I much prefer having enjoyed almost all of the world's great and iconic mountains back then. Now, I wouldn't want to do it like just another one of those hordes that invade every beautiful corner of our planet. Young people won't be able to enjoy it the way we did...
