As a fairly fit hiker i cant in good faith recommend this hike. The „trail“ is more like a stream so get prepared for wet feet. Also you have to climb some parts because of fallen trees or intense vegetation. There is nothing interesting to see along the trail and the guide couldnt provide any facts about the nature or volcano for that matter. Since the top part is almost always covered by clouds you cant really see too much from the „viewpoint“. It took us around 3-4 hours to get up to the lagoon and you have to cover approximately 1200 meters in elevation. If you still decide to go make sure to wear good footwear, bring enough water and protection against rain (even in summer) because the upper part of the forest is always wet.

After Concepcion, I had wanted to join a group to climb Maderas but there was no one keen to climb this volcano. A private guide would cost me much more, so after waiting for 4 days on Ometepe, I hiked up volcano Maderas on 24 June 2026, solo and unguided. Not a smart thing to do, quite high risk actually. I literally had the whole mountain to myself, not a single soul during my 10 hours on the mountain. I saw a thin green poisonous snake, soil erosions, landslides and big uprooted trees on this mountain. The route is not easily found, muddy and slippery. I could have stepped onto hollow ground - fallen into unknown depth, and yelling would not have gotten me any help. Get a guide or at least do not go solo. More experienced hikers had perished on this mountain. I don't like the look of the summit crater.

The route is hard, wet and slippery, especially the upper part. Hikingboots are higly recommended. The hike is not very rewarding. We used Alltrails and no guide. One part was misleading on the map. Better follow the bigger paths.
