I enjoyed this more than the Cannon Beach! The creek was fun to walk through, there’s some caves nearby too. We started at the Cafe on Hawk Creek and both the rock and the beach a great way to spend the afternoon. It wasn’t a planned stop, but I’m glad we did!

Four proposals were made at Proposal Rock on this visit. I proposed that Lily, our GSD, play fetch in the waves. Accepted immediately. My buddy proposed hiking to the top. Also accepted. I proposed to document all of it. Mission accomplished. Finally, the rock itself has been waiting for proposals since around 1900, when sea captain Charley Gage brought Della Page here and asked for her hand. Della's mother Sarah dubbed it Proposal Rock on the spot. The name stuck. Blue skies popped with wispy clouds drifting over the Pacific, the kind of Oregon Coast day that reminds you why people put up with nine months of gray. Low tide opened the walk out beautifully and the wet sand reflected everything back like glass. The rock is a basalt sea stack, part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, originally connected to Cascade Head before thousands of years of wave erosion carved it free. It rises straight out of the surf rather than blending into the shoreline, which is why it photographs so dramatically and feels so iconic in person. My buddy made it to the top. The views of the entire Neskowin shoreline are worth every step, though the scramble up is steep and unmaintained, so watch your footing. Lily took her fetch responsibilities very seriously and covered herself in enough saltwater and sand to qualify as a temporary marine ecosystem. Just steps away is the Neskowin Ghost Forest, ancient Sitka spruce stumps buried by a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake roughly 2,000 years ago and uncovered by storms in 1997. Two natural wonders for the price of one beach walk. No engagements took place, but several excellent proposals succeeded.

Do not follow the navigation; it will lead you onto private road. Search "Beach State Recreation Site, Neskowin, OR 97149", park there and walk to the beach.

This is a beautiful beach to stay at and take late night walks with the family. It was a perfect place to take my favorite person to put on a ring! 💍 It truly is Proposal Rock! A very peculiar Ghost Forest is lodged in the beach and can be seen from the beach and the rock! If your able, come visit!!
