One of the "100 Best Island Mountains." The hiking trail is starting to get a little rough. There is no view from the summit. There is an observation deck about 5 minutes from the summit, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Dogo Island.

It's quite a walk from the parking lot, but when you see the shrine, you'll be overwhelmed and all your fatigue will disappear.

At 451m above sea level, this mountain is the highest on Nishinoshima Island. The summit is only home to a commercial broadcasting station, so the views aren't great. However, you can get a good view from an observation deck a short distance away. Legend has it that Oyamatsumi of Mount Yakeka and Uduka of Mount Kaedoku on Nakanoshima competed for a princess deity. Oyamatsumi lost a stone-throwing contest, losing the princess deity to Uduka. In a second contest, Oyamatsumi won, taking all the sakaki trees that grow on the mountain. This is why it's said that no sakaki trees grow on Mount Kaedoku. The hiking trail splits into the Learning Trail and the Exploration Trail 300m up the mountain. The Learning Trail is 1.2km from the trailhead to the summit, and the Exploration Trail is 1km, both taking about 30-40 minutes. The two trails reunite just before the summit. If you're heading to Mount Yakeka Shrine, head towards Exploration. The shrine passes right in front of the exploration trailhead, so if you make a detour, the total distance will be roughly the same. The hiking trail is well maintained and easy to walk on. There are no steep slopes or bushwhacking. There are signs to the observation deck, but no specific indication of the summit. Just head in the direction marked "Commercial TV Antenna" to reach the summit. We recommend stopping by the shrine on the way up, and returning via the Gakushu no Michi path on the way down. Wear comfortable clothing. Sneakers are fine. Light hiking shoes should be fine for a comfortable climb. Free parking and toilets are available. Adjacent to the trailhead.
