About This Adventure Destination

Noratus Cemetery, located in the charming village of Noratus in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia, is truly a unique historical destination. A short distance from the serene shores of Lake Sevan, this medieval cemetery is home to over 800 khachkars—intricately carved cross-stones that showcase the remarkable artistry of Armenian stonemasons. These khachkars date back to as early as the 9th century and offer a glimpse into the cultural and religious history of Armenia. Each stone tells its own story, bearing distinct patterns and script, making this site a veritable outdoor museum. The cemetery is still in use today, blending the ancient with the living, and providing an ongoing connection to Armenia’s rich heritage. Visitors are often struck by the tranquil beauty of the landscape, with the blue expanse of Lake Sevan visible in the distance, set against the dramatic peaks of the Lesser Caucasus. This natural backdrop only enhances the sense of peace and reflection that Noratus offers, making it a stand-out destination for anyone interested in history, culture, and art.

Editorial Assessment

Noratus Cemetery is a cultural and historical gem, but it is a man-made landmark, thus not rated highly for natural formation.

The place is very interesting. At the entrance there are information panels that suggest following a numbered route through the cemetery. The problem is that some indicators have "mysteriously" disappeared inside the cemetery. You can tell that someone has ripped them off... ... Maybe the grandmothers in the village who offer you a guided tour of the cemetery can explain what happened ...
