About This Adventure Destination

Snowshoe Falls is a striking natural waterfall located near the small town of Noxon in western Montana. Set within the rugged forests of this beautiful region, the falls showcase a dramatic drop where icy mountain waters rush over the rocky cliffs, creating a spectacular display of motion and sound. This waterfall stands out for its raw power and freshwater purity, fed by tributaries high in the Cabinet Mountains.

The falls plunge over jagged basalt rock formations, sculpted through millennia of volcanic activity and erosion. The surrounding area features dense coniferous trees typical of Montana’s inland temperate rainforests, offering habitat for wildlife such as deer, eagles, and black bears. Snowshoe Falls also holds cultural significance for local indigenous peoples, believed to be part of their ancestral land with stories connected to water spirits and nature’s spirit forces.

Visitors are drawn to the accessible vantage points that allow close-up views of the waterfall’s energetic rush, combined with peaceful forest trails and calming natural scenery. The falls are especially impressive in late spring and early summer when snowmelt swells the flow, making it a fantastic example of Montana’s pristine outdoor environment. Nearby hiking and birdwatching opportunities complement the experience, giving visitors a chance to immerse themselves in this relatively untouched corner of the American Northwest.

Whether visiting to appreciate the geological features or to enjoy quiet moments in nature, Snowshoe Falls offers a memorable stop in Montana’s greater wilderness network, making it one of the more compelling waterfall destinations in this part of the country.

Editorial Assessment

Snowshoe Falls offers a unique and beautiful natural experience with its powerful drop and pristine surroundings, making it a worthwhile visit for outdoor enthusiasts. I parked before/after the guardrail on the side of the falls and walked the creek there. It was THICK, even in November, and no trail. It was worth it though. The falls was awesome.

It's a hike off the side of the road up, about 100ft from the closest place you can park. But, if you decide to make the trek,it's beautiful!!
