McLean Falls is one of the Catlins' most striking waterfalls, deep in the lush Tautuku Forest on the Southern Scenic Route. Turn off at Chaslands onto Rewcastle Rd - a mix of sealed and unsealed rural road, drive four kilometres, and you've arrived at the carpark. There is a toilet facility at the carpark. The track is an easy to moderate 40-minute return walk, threading along the Tautuku River through dense podocarp forest, pristine streams, mossy boulders and tall tree ferns. The final lap includes a short, sharp climb and then the view opens to a dramatic multi-tiered cascade waterfall. The area is ideal for photography or just standing there simply soaking in the Catlins’ wild, unpolished beauty which certainly lingers in the air - with that unblemished, crisp rainforest aroma.
